Ray “Razor” Matz Jr. is an energetic, kind-hearted and passionate leader in his community and in his home. He is a devoted husband, a fun-loving father of 3 children, a successful business owner, and a dedicated children's minister in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Ray was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 17, 1967. He graduated from Archbishop Ryan High School in Philadelphia and afterwards attended the University of Minnesota. When he realized his hockey endeavors weren’t panning out in college, he moved to Smith Falls Ontario Canada to further pursue his hockey career. After playing one year of hockey in Canada, Ray returned home to Philadelphia to start Razors Landscaping at the age of 19. During the next 18 years he continued to run his own landscaping company, invest in various business opportunities, and create a successful real estate portfolio. He was also honored to play Roller Hockey for Team USA for three years, becoming a three-time world champion. At the age of 42 Ray decided to take his entrepreneurship in a different direction and he started a vending company that he currently runs.
At the young age of 39, Ray finally found the “right one” and so he married Julie—they just celebrated their 10 year anniversary! Ray and Julie have three awesome kids…Jeays (9), Razor (6), and Mission (2).
Ray has extensive experience with kids in many different arenas of life, including having three crazy ones of his own. His hockey career gave him the opportunity to be the head instructor at Team USA Clinics for 20 years; he has taught hockey to kids of all ages from all over the world. Ray served 6 years in the children's ministry at Calvary Chapel in Cary, NC. When Ray’s family moved to Fernandina Beach in January of 2015, he began serving in the children’s ministry at Journey Church under the great leadership of Bryan Simpkins. Ray also created the Main Beach Roller Hockey kids program, and he absolutely loves coaching and encouraging every child he meets, on or off the rink!
Ray is currently writing a book to motivate and encourage husbands and fathers to lead, love, and live! Ray is pursuing his passion of reaching kids and families through a coaching and public speaking career, as well as within the church ministry—although he is not exactly sure what will become of it all, he believes God has His hands on it so it's going to be awesome!!
